The vast majority of states in the USA permit citizens to own Class III weapons...within certain restrictions.  These laws vary from state to state and can be found accessing the BATF site. As a Class III dealer located in Ohio we can sell machineguns, silencers, short-barreled rifles/shotguns and those items classified as Any Other Weapons (AOW) to private individuals and police departments. We sell and transfer Class III weapons to individuals and departments outside of Ohio as well. Private individuals may need the assistance of a Class III dealer in their state. How Do I Buy One? Once you decide on that special item, we begin the paperwork. First, 2-2x4 passport photos are taken. Second, fingerprints are taken at the local police department. Third, the proper BATF form is filled out and submitted to the chief law enforcement officer (CLEO) of your jurisdiction. This is signed stating that it is permissible to own such a weapon in your area and that they have no information on you that would stop you from owning a firearm. Fourth, a check for $200 (or $5 if it's an AOW) is sent along with the paperwork to BATF's NFA Branch where it is processed. Depending on NFA Branch's workload you may have your completed paperwork back in 6-8 weeks.
